KOM sprint - Sam Lilley

Report
Josh Ferrie won the Open Coburg Cycling Club road championship on Saturday13 September in a four man sprint from Paul Logan and Tom McDonough.

The race started at the Lancefield cafe with a 4km under control procession through the town and onto the open and very windy roads.  The big news of the day was the return of M5 competitor Kevin Russell who had just returned from 2 months of riding in Europe and Colorado. He looked fit and tanned and ready to go.  upon the race starting Luke McDonough was the first to test the bunch.  The only move to make any ground however was Frank Harkins who road off the front about 10km into the race.  Luke McDonough and Michael Skerritt joined the move and the trio held a couple of hundred metres lead for about 5km, before the Phil Smith lead bunch brought them back just short of the first turn into Don's road.

It was at this point that Peter Ferrie punctured and Tim (his brother) stopped to give him his wheel, thus ending the chances of the Ferrie brothers as neither was able to make contact with the lead group again, with Tim abandoning.  Luke McDonough and Frank Harkins felt the pressure and got dropped along Don's road.

Sam Lilley won the KOM sprint across the start finish line on end of lap one.  The lead bunch remained intact and contained, Josh Ferrie, Paul Logan, Tom McDonough, Phil Smith, Kevin Russell, Sam Lilley and Anthony Somers.

Dons road on the second lap proved too tough for Lilley and Somers and they dropped off.  The remaining 5, with Phil Smith doing the majority of work at the front were content to ride to the finish and leave the results to the fastest sprinter on the day.  This proved to be Josh Ferrie, the youngest rider in the field to take out his first title with the club.
