Bikepacking can be intimidating to start out in. Figuring out what you need to carry, where you can carry it, what gear will fit your bike. Then there’s what spares & emergency kit you might need. Then there’s imagining all the scenarios you could come across and how to prepare for them. It’s a lot to consider!
So you begin with research, and we have put all our bikepacking bags, accessories and tools into one section for you.
Start with a bikepacking saddle bag; a great place to carry a large amount of kit like your sleeping bag, clothes & bivvy. There are modular systems where the dry bag is removable from the outer sheath like the famously reliable Revelate Terrapin System.
If you would rather have a bag that will be easy to take off your bike entirely when you reach camp, there’s the Ortlieb Seat-Pack QR. And then there’s just the enormous capacity option, to go huge or go home! Ortlieb have this one covered with their 16.5L Seat-Pack.
Next it’s utilising the space on your flat bar or between the hoods on your drop bar gravel bike. This is another great place to carry gear on your bike. A bikepacking handlebar bag will give you more stability in your steering and pushing weight feels easier than pulling it.
Handlebar bags also come in modular systems where you have a waterproof drybag, that is attached to your handlebar & a mount remaining. A great example of this system is the Revelate Harness.
If you are thinking of carrying just about everything on your bars then you can’t go past the Accessory Pocket from Apidura. As a bonus, this bag integrates with their Handlebar Pack. Another company doing a similar combo is Ortlieb with their Accessory-Pack and Handlebar-Pack.
To round out the top three it’s bikepacking frame bags. Because the main triangle of your bike is a great place to carry heavy loads. Ideal for your tools, a hydration bladder, or anything that you don’t want bouncing around while you ride.
While it’s a great place to carry, it’s also the trickiest to find the best fit to your bike. Every bike frame is shaped differently, and every different sized frame has a different geometry. This makes finding the right size frame bag a bit time consuming! We know how challenging this can be so we stock a wide variety of brands with their different sizes & shapes.
If you are unsure the frame bag you are looking at will fit your bike, and you live locally, come by our shop with your bike. We are more than happy to try on all the frame bags we have on your bike to find out which one works best.
If you aren’t in Melbourne you can still buy frame bags online. We offer refunds & exchanges so there’s no stress if the bag you have purchased doesn’t quite work. Just let us know & we can help you out!
