While the ideals of bikepacking are about going rack-less and backpack free, sometimes your ride just calls for more.
Here you can find the down-low on bikepacking backpacks & panniers.
A common reason cyclists opt for panniers when bikepacking is the limited carrying space in smaller sized frames. A smaller sized frame has a smaller main triangle space meaning it can be tricky to find a frame bag that fits. If you are also short on tyre clearance when you run a saddle bag then panniers might be for you.
Running a front lowrider on the fork of your bike will allow your panniers to mount on the front end of your bike. This means they are out of the way of your handlebars so you can carry on running a bikepacking handlebar roll. The panniers designed to mount on lowriders are smaller and compact allowing for good toe-clearance when riding. Their low center of gravity will have you feeling nice and stable on the long rides and descents.
Ortlieb Waterproof have been pannier bag makers for decades. While their panniers were originally designed for commuting & touring, they have expanded their range to include a bikepacking solution.
The Ortlieb Gravel-Pack is a pair of bikepacking panniers to mount on a lowrider (check out Tubus lowriders like the Tara for an optimum setup). They can also be mounted on a rear rack if you are running one. Ortlieb’s universal mounting system ensures they will work on just about any rack.
The original and the best in the world of panniers, the Ortlieb Bike-Packer is a touring style pannier with an optimised shape for carrying the maximum amount of gear on your bike. With lid closures rather than a traditional roll-top closure, these bags are still fully waterproof and hugely useful for packing your camping gear on long rides in bad weather. Definitely a good use of your bike when the days will be long & you won’t be returning home any time soon.
Bikepacking adventures are all about packing your gear on your bike, rather than yourself, but sometimes throwing a pack on your back is the solution. Whether you are heading into town & need to pick up some food to carry to your camp site, or just need a backpack to carry on your ride to pull out when you get off your bike and go for a hike, we have a bikepacking backpack to suit your trip.
The Ortlieb Light-Pack is a great solution for those trips when you aren’t sure whether you will need a little more capacity or not. The Light-Pack rolls down and compresses into a neat carry bag and unravels into a proper usable sizes backpack when you need it.
For the emergency backpack that you carry just in case you need to carry some beers from town to your campsite there the Apidura Packable Musette, not quite a backpack but with multiple strapping points it won’t swing around while you ride with it on!
For the hikers there is the Ortlieb Atrack, a serious hiking pack with good ventilation on the back-padding for when you need to carry it on your bike too.
