Bikepacking handlebar bags are one of the first places we would suggest you store gear on a trip. Because there are just so many options! Whether you are riding a flat bar bike or a drop-bar bike, there’s a handlebar bag for that. There’s also bags for aerobikes, so really, no handlebar escapes the clutches of bikepacking!
In terms of packing your handlebar pack, it’s best to think of it as storage for light but bulky gear. Things like your bivvy or tent. Or some lightweight clothes if they aren’t already in your saddle bag.
So now you are thinking handlebar bags, you have to think of which type you are needing. They come in two styles, modular & standard. The modular system is where a mounting shell is on your bars, and a dry bag is strapped into it. The standard system is where the bag is like every other bag. You remove it from your bike if you need to, but mostly you just pull your gear out.
This comes down to personal preference & camping styles we think. In inclement weather its nice to just bring your entire bag inside your tent. This is where a harness or shell system is particularly convenient.
The standard system can be easier if you hate re-strapping your gear to your bike in the morning. Maybe you hate packing, or your set up is difficult. Leaving your bag on your bike & just pulling gear out of it can be less stressful.
This is also handy when you are in a rush in the dark at night or just want to de-camp quickly in the morning.
All of the bikepacking handlebar bags we stock at Abbotsford Cycles are either waterproof or water resistant, extremely durable and flexible. We stock a number of brands with all their sizes and shapes so you can definitely find a handlebar bar to suit your bike & your set up.
The best thing about handlebar bags is the compatibility brands like Revelate, Ortlieb & Apidura give you with their extra bags designed to mount on top of your handlebar bag.
The Apidura Accessory Pocket as well as the Ortlieb Accessory-Pack are designed to integrate via buckles to your existing handlebar bag. This gives you a place to carry things like your phone or snacks that’s easier to access while on the ride.
When it comes to carrying bikepacking gear on your bike, a handlebar bag is a great place to start. Because all bikes, whether flat bar or drop-bar will have space for you to install a handlebar roll. So even if you have a small frame, a handlebar bag will fit!
