No touring cyclist could be without the outstanding convenience of Dynamo Lighting systems on their bike. Check out dynamo hubs & lights here.
Easily one of the most popular wheel builds we perform here at Abbotsford Cycles is the dynamo wheel build. Preparing for a long tour will definitely make a dynamo set-up worth while. You will be able to keep your lights charged with a minimal difference to your riding experience. And you will never need to stress about riding in the early hours or late at night again.
Dynamo lighting upgrades also give you the option of charging your devices while you ride. In this way you will be optimising the powering capacity of your dynamo hub.
Dynamo lighting is a method of powering lights on a bicycle using a small generator that is built into your wheel hub. As your wheel spins, the generator produces enough electricity to power the lights.
In this way you will have extremely reliable & long lasting lights. And they will never need recharging. Your riding of your bike will power your lights for you. And this is why a dynamo system is popular with commuters & tourers alike.
Dynamo lighting is extremely popular in places where cycling to work & school is common. Commonly seen on European bicycles, dynamo lights are a convenient choice for many a cyclist!
Offering good visibility and long-lasting illumination, these lights are excellent for night riding. Their practicality cannot be overstated. Never worry about your bike lights being out of charge again!
Dynamo hubs can have a small effect on the ride feel of a bike, but the impact is generally minimal and not noticeable for most riders.
Magnets inside the hub are activated by the revolutions of the wheel on modern dynamo hubs. This process generates enough energy to produce an electrical current which is then directed into the lighting system.
Where previous dynamo lighting systems used the friction from the rim to generate this same electrical current, hubs work differently. The magnetic hub version produces significantly less drag on the bike when riding. Nonetheless if you ride a lot of bikes, you may notice the feel of your dynamo hub is different.
The hub is generally heavier than a standard hub, and certainly heavier than performance road hubs. But this is a minor trade-off for the convenience of lights that never die!
Considering a dynamo conversion? We can help! Abbotsford Cycles has been hand building wheels for 25 years & we are passionate about the process.
