Sturmey Archer are the pioneers of the internally geared hub and Abbotsford Cycles has been stocking all the Sturmey Archer parts you could dream of for decades.
People love their Sturmey’s. And we know why. With their simple design, shifting is a breeze, and there’s so little maintenance.
Having your drivetrain tucked away into your hub has huge benefits in terms of protection. You will find that without the constant road dirt & grime hitting your cogs & derailleur that your bike is easier to maintain. Although you will still need to bring your bike to a mechanic eventually. But the internally geared hub (IGH) design removes a large amount of maintenance.
Bent hangers & damaged derailleurs are exceedingly common in bike’s ridden in urban environments. Or even just bike’s transported in the back of a car. Having your drivetrain inside the hub really removes a lot of risk of damage to your shifting ability.
The shifting process on Sturmey hubs is largely a mystery – and that’s a good thing. As shifting gears is definitely an art. And not many people have nailed it. Especially those who commute as their primary use of a bike. Shifting is sometimes just another thing you won’t want to think about on your ride home.
Sturmey have this covered by making shifting precise & perfect with just a twist of the handlebar grip. You will find this simplicity is like modern electronic shifting in that it can only be done correctly.
This has always been a huge benefit to a Sturmey hub, and why it’s often found on a town bike. You will never need to consider how far to push your shifter over again. Simply twist & carry on.
We especially like the internally geared hub for town bikes, cruisers & commuter bikes. Also great on touring bikes, this method of shifting is great for entry level riders.
