Dynamo hubs are multi-purpose, they not only need to power your lights, but they also need to be fast, light & strong – for this we have Shutter Precision.
Dynamo hubs are often an upgrade from your existing hub, even without their powering ability!
Shutter Precision is our preferred brand for dynamo lighting, and we have been building with them for years.
Their reliability & serviceability is next to none, and we definitely recommend them. They are a great price point & will last you tens of thousands of kilometres without fail.
Most of the hubs from Shutter Precision have the same output, the differences in pricing is to do with compatibility. The different hub types you see listed above are for different types of forks & brakes. Your hub needs to work with your brake type, such as rim brake or disc brake. If you have disc brakes you will also need to confirm the type of disc brake you have. Centerlock & 6 Bolt disc brake types require slightly different hubs. This is to do with the ‘flange’ on the hub itself.
Once you have confirmed which brake type you need, you also need to determine if the axle width or length is compatible. If you are unsure you can remove your bike’s current axle & see if it has the dimensions printed on it. Alternatively if you know your bike model you can look up the specifications for your model. With this information you can confidently purchase a dynamo hub!
But if you are concerned about choosing the correct hub, we can help! You can give us a call at our bicycle repair shop & we can help you find the right parts.
We can also talk you through the wheel building options for your dynamo set up too.
On this page you will find the range of Shutter Precision hubs that we stock. And you may notice quite a large difference in the price across the range. This is not due to one hub being ‘better’ than another. Almost all of the hubs from Shutter Precision offer the same output. And this output is sufficient for basically every dynamo powered lighting system you can buy.
The difference in the pricing across the range of hubs has to do with compatibility. Your hub has to match your bike’s fork, and your particular type of brake. Generally a hub which is suitable for a rim brake bicycle will be cheaper than a disc brake compatible hub.
This is because of the different flanges & hardware that needs to be included on the hub. The hubs is also built slightly differently to account for brake force.
So when choosing your dynamo hub, you can concern yourself less with the price & more with compatibility. You will need to know the brake type you have to choose the correct hub. Namely if you have disc brakes you will need to determine if they are centerlock or 6 bolt.
While we say this, there is a small caveat. If you have a keen eye, you may have seen someone with a disc brake dynamo hub on a rim brake bike. And if you have the correct axle type as the disc brake hub, you can fit it too. It is not exactly the design intent of the hub, so you will have a superfluous flange. But the hub will work just the same, and power your lights. As long as you have the correct axle type, you can do this too.
So you have decided to go ahead and do a dynamo set up. We can do all the rest of the thinking for you if you like!
We can determine which hub you need for your bike & wheels, and build the wheel for you. Our mechanics hand build wheels in our workshop everyday. And hand built wheels outperform machine built wheels every day of the week!
Since a dynamo set up is a long term investment we absolutely recommend you use an experienced & qualified wheel builder. Building with a dynamo hub is not more expensive than a regular wheel build. But having these wheels built by hand means they will perform better & be more reliable over time.
We can build your dynamo wheel in our workshop on the same day that you drop it off, if we have the hub in stock – which we usually do!
For a quote on the cost of a dynamo build, get in touch and we can work it out with you. The cost will include the hub, some new spokes to suit, and the labour to build the hub into the wheel. At the end of the day you will have a high quality & multi-functional wheel!
