Handlebar bags come in loosely 3 categories here at Abbotsfrd Cycles. We have bags for touring, bag for commuting& bags for bikepacking.
Your commuting handlebar bags are designed for carrying some basic items like your phone, a jacket, your wallet & keys. These will generally be small bags that are easily removed from your bars. Bags like Ortlieb’s accessory pack is a perfect example that mounts via Velcro. It’s an excellent size if you won’t be needing to carry much.
Your touring bags will be a larger capacity & more permanent fixture to your touring bike. These are bucket-like bags that will allow you to maximise your bike’s overall carrying capacity.
Then of course there are bikepacking handlebar bags. These vary but are most commonly dry bags & roll-type carrying bags. You will find these bags are best suited to carrying soft things like clothing or your bivvy. Not much else will comfortably stuff in your dry bag. You will find it’s hard to even out a dry bag on your bars with things other than clothes.
