Ortlieb bike backpacks are designed to suit the needs of cyclists. So you will find their complete range is reliably waterproof and made from sturdy stuff. Because Ortlieb’s motto is Always Waterproof & Built to Endure.
Let’s break down the range.
These are the most bike-like of the bike backpacks in the range. The Velocity is basically a mini version of bicycle courier (or bike messenger) bag. You know those enormous bags they wear to carry urgent freight & documents around the city.
The Velocity has a roll closure that rolls in the direction of your when you’re wearing it. Meaning that it becomes very low-profile around head height. Making it easier for you to shoulder-check when you’re riding. Which is an incredibly important design feature you won’t find in fashion backpacks.
The Velocity is also made in the PS fabric which is lighter weight & comes in more muted colourways than the standard ‘tarpaulin’ look. But the Velocity standard comes in the ultra huge 29L!
Ortlieb’s Commuter Daypack range is your bike bag disguised as a sensible city backpack. It still has very specific bike features like a place to hold your U lock on the outside. But it’s available in more muted colourways, a lighter weight fabric & can easily be seen as a normal everyday backpack. Making it a great urban commuter bag, or a travel bag. Once again, it’s waterproof. And like many of the backpacks from Ortlieb it has a laptop sleeve.
The Vario is every cyclists favourite backpack. It’s a hybrid, it’s a backpack that doubles as a pannier. And Ortlieb have been making this bag for so many years. You know it’s good!
The Vario disguises it’s pannier mounting gear with a flap that you whip across and hook to secure. So while it’s on your back nobody knows its a pannier. And then when you’re ready to hang it on your rack you whip the flap back. And then it doesn’t look like a backpack when it’s on your bike. So sneaky.
But it’s not all about being incognito. The Vario is popular because it makes carrying your pannier off-bike a lot easier. If you’re someone who wants to go out after work and leave your bike locked up, you can. You’re not limited to carrying your pannier around awkwardly. It just becomes a backpack.
The Atrack is the least bikey of Ortlieb’s bike backpacks. Unless of course you are bike adventuring. Then it is exceptionally bikey.
The Atrack is a hiking backpack. It’s got so many incredibly thoughtful design features for hiking. It has a super adjustable fit for any sized torso. And it opens like a duffle bag so you can lay it down on the ground and spread it open. Making finding anything inside SO much easier. And then it doubles as a surface you can use when the ground is wet. Because of course it’s waterproof. And the ‘dirty’ side of the backpack won’t touch you when you put it back on. And your straps stay clean. This is just so handy we don’t know how to mention it enough.
They also make a bikepacking specific Atrack that is lighter weight & doesn’t have a hip belt. Because a hip belt would get in the way when you’re riding.
