Robert Axle Lightning Bolt-On Axle’s are the streamlined solution for the bulky-handle found on so many stock Axle’s. Robert Axle make a Lightning Bolt-On front or rear axle to suit just about any bike you can think of, just enter your bikes details on the Axle Finder on our site to find the axle you need.
It’s common to buy a bike these days that has a thru axle, but that axle has a little handle for releasing the axle from the fork. This means the axle has to be wound in, and tightened by hand. If you are someone who takes their wheel out often, you may find the handle is difficult to tighten correctly each time. You will also find the handle is hard to have aligned nicely on your bike, whilst also being the correct torque. This is a common enough problem that Robert Axle has decided to solve it.
The lightning bolt-on axle simply replaces your thru axle with a tool operable version, with no handle. This axle will be lighter & stiffer than the axle in your bike. Because a tool is used to tighten (bolt on) your axle, you will not have difficulty achieving the correct torque. A tool fitted part will always be a more reliable & stronger option than a hand fitted part.
Axle’s with handles will be easily knocked on trails or when moving the bike to & from a bike rack. This risks loosening the axle & making your wheel less secure in your bike. Over time this will damage the threads of the axle & your fork. It can also result in an accident. It is not uncommon for us to encounter a loosely fitted thru axle in our bicycle repair shop. While it can seem like a minor issue, it can become very expensive if you have a crash or damage your fork.
We absolutely recommend replacing your bike’s stock axle with a Robert Axle. You will find the quality is almost always an improvement over the one that came in your bike. And this is no fault of the bike that you bought – it is simply what happens when you upgrade to a specialist supplier. Robert Axle specialise in axles. You will find the tolerances are much higher & the quality is much more important to them than to your bigger component manufacturers. Making many components will not make you a better manufacturer of all those components. But it will make you a market dominator!
We support Robert Axle because they support cyclists and you won’t find a nicer team of cyclists than the folks at Robert Axle.
